Performance Max

A Google Ads campaign type that bids across Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, and Maps from one goal and one asset group. You give signals; the system places ads.

Detailed explanation

Fuel is conversion goals, audience signals, product feeds, and text/image/video assets. Search-term reporting stays limited, so brand cannibalization and messy conversion actions are common traps.

Without enough conversion volume and clean measurement, “learning” is guesswork. Brand exclusions and a real primary conversion matter.

Many accounts still keep high-intent Search separate. Role split: PMax for breadth, Search for control on profitable queries.

Frequently asked questions

Does PMax replace Search campaigns?
Not in every account. If you need query-level control, a standard Search campaign is often kept.
What do you optimize in PMax?
Conversion actions, value rules, asset quality, audience signals, and brand exclusions—not keyword lists.

  • PPCPPC (Pay-Per-Click) is a paid advertising model where you pay only when someone clicks your ad; it underpins Google Ads and many social ad platforms.
  • Smart BiddingGoogle Ads auction-time bidding that chases a conversion or conversion-value goal. tCPA, tROAS, and Maximize conversions sit in this family.
  • ConversionThe defined action you wanted completed: a purchase, signup, download, or form. Traffic without that count means the campaign flew blind on its results.
  • Shopping AdsSearch ads that show product image, price, and store name from a product feed. Feed quality usually matters more than bid tweaks.
  • ROASROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is the revenue generated for every unit of advertising spend; it is used to measure profitability in performance marketing.
  • Demand GenGoogle’s visual demand campaigns across YouTube, Discover, and Gmail. They create demand; they do not harvest a typed search the way Search does.
