Conversion

The defined action you wanted completed: a purchase, signup, download, or form. Traffic without that count means the campaign flew blind on its results.

Detailed explanation

You measure it once the page or campaign answers “what counts as success?” A newsletter can be the top-funnel action and an order the bottom; stuffing both into one goal inflates the report. The event in GTM or analytics must match the label.

Counting every click, firing thank-you twice, or mixing ad clicks with server-side orders are the usual messes. A sloppy window or attribution model makes channels look like heroes or villains they are not. Micro and macro goals have to stay separate or optimization aims at the wrong thing.

Read volume, rate, cost per action, and revenue together. Rising volume with a falling rate often means weaker quality. Lock the definition, kill double-counting, then change bids or the page.

Frequently asked questions

How do micro and macro goals differ?
Macro is the business result (order, qualified request). Micro is a step (play, scroll). Do not dump both into one conversion bucket.
How do you spot double-counting?
Thank-you reloads that fire again, or a pixel plus a server event writing the same order twice. A unique transaction id is required.

Internal links for the topic cluster — read these concepts together.

  • Conversion RateConversion Rate is the percentage of visitors who complete a predefined action relative to all visitors.
  • CTAThe button, link, or line that names the next step you want someone to take. Vague labels like “learn more” may collect clicks and still fail the conversion.
  • Landing PageThe first page a visitor hits after an ad, email, or search click—built for one job. Unlike a homepage, it trades navigation clutter for a promise, proof, and a single call to action.
  • LeadA person who is not a customer yet but left enough contact—and permission—to start a conversation. Traffic is not a lead; a form, trial, or chat capture is.
  • GTMGoogle’s container for shipping tags without a code deploy every time. Analytics, pixels, and conversion events should live here under versioned releases.
  • Event TrackingEvent Tracking is the process of recording specific actions users take on a website or app, such as button clicks, form submissions, or video views, individually and sending them to analytics tools.
