Visit Duration

How long a visit or session lasts; used to judge engagement and content depth. Single-page bounces can show near-zero time, so read the metric with that caveat.

Detailed explanation

Time between the first and last hit in a session. A long stay can mean reading or comparison; a short stay can mean mismatched intent or a slow page. A glossary read of a few minutes is plausible; a bounce may look like seconds.

The measurement hole: a one-page session with no exit hit can record zero time. SPAs without virtual pageviews lie the same way. Averages inflate on a few marathon sessions; the median is more honest.

Decide with duration plus bounce plus conversion. Short time and high conversion on ads can mean the page did its job. Short time and high bounce on organic often means intent or snippet mismatch.

Frequently asked questions

Why does duration show zero?
On a one-page session the tool may never see an exit hit, so it cannot compute time. That is not proof the person left instantly.
Is a long visit always good?
No. Getting lost in a form also stretches the clock. Read it with conversion and task success.

Internal links for the topic cluster — read these concepts together.

  • VisitA session-like stay on the site; several pageviews can sit inside one visit. The same person can log several visits in a day while still counting as one unique user.
  • Bounce RateBounce Rate is the percentage of visitors who view only a single page and leave without further interaction.
  • GA4Google Analytics 4: an event-based measurement model for sites and apps. Report logic is not a 1:1 copy of Universal Analytics.
  • Unique VisitorsHow many distinct visitor identities reached the site in a period, with repeats folded together. It measures reach, not session volume; device and browser splits can inflate the number.
  • User ExperienceThe whole journey a person feels on the site: speed, clarity, trust, and finishing the job. The interface is the visible layer; copy, performance, and support sit inside the experience too.
  • Event TrackingEvent Tracking is the process of recording specific actions users take on a website or app, such as button clicks, form submissions, or video views, individually and sending them to analytics tools.
