SEM

Marketing for visibility in search results — the umbrella can include SEO, but most teams mean paid search. Budget, bids, and Quality Score run independently from organic ranking work.

Detailed explanation

Search engine marketing started as an umbrella for paid and organic search. In practice it almost always means search ads — Google Ads, Microsoft Ads — billed per click or conversion. SEO is discussed as a separate craft, even when the same keywords appear in both.

On the paid side, auctions, Quality Score, and landing-page fit set cost. Brand queries can be cheap and high-intent; generic queries inflate CPC. Bidding on terms you already rank for is often defense and SERP coverage, not cannibalization.

Decide with ROAS, cost per conversion, and organic gaps. Paid search is a speed layer, especially for new sites or crowded SERPs — not a substitute for organic. Weak Quality Score quietly taxes every click.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as SEO?
No. Day to day, SEM means paid search; SEO means organic ranking. The umbrella definition covers both, but budgets and metrics stay separate.
Should you advertise on keywords you already rank for?
Often yes: to crowd out competitors, own more of the SERP, or cover demand while organic is still weak. The call depends on CPC versus margin.

  • PPCPPC (Pay-Per-Click) is a paid advertising model where you pay only when someone clicks your ad; it underpins Google Ads and many social ad platforms.
  • CPCCost per click: what you pay when someone clicks, not when the ad is only shown. The auction and Quality Score — or the platform equivalent — move that price as much as your bid does.
  • Quality ScoreQuality Score is Google Ads' 1–10 rating of a keyword's expected relevance, based on expected CTR, ad relevance, and landing page experience.
  • Ad RankAd Rank is the ranking score that determines the position an ad appears in on platforms like Google Ads for a given search, combining bid amount, ad quality, and expected impact.
  • Landing PageThe first page a visitor hits after an ad, email, or search click—built for one job. Unlike a homepage, it trades navigation clutter for a promise, proof, and a single call to action.
