Heatmap
A visual of click, scroll, or movement density on a page. It shows what people notice and what they ignore.
Detailed explanation
Click maps, scroll maps, and sometimes move maps are different layers. “Put every button on the red spot” is a trap; rage clicks on empty space are also a signal.
Small samples look like insight and are noise. Split mobile and desktop: a desktop CTA can sit below the fold on phones.
Heatmaps generate hypotheses. Winners are confirmed with an A/B test or a clear metric move.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a heatmap enough to decide?
- No. It shows what to try. A test or a clean metric change confirms the winner.
- What does a scroll map tell you?
- How far content is seen. If the key message sits below the fold, layout changes first.
