Publisher

The party that owns the content and the ad inventory: a site, app, or show. Advertisers buy the impressions; this side sells the space and the audience.

Detailed explanation

A news site, newsletter, app, or video channel becomes a publisher the moment paid units sit beside content. Revenue comes from direct deals, networks like AdSense, or programmatic auctions through an SSP.

Too many ads chase users off; too few leave inventory unsold. Fake traffic and weak viewability hurt brand safety and CPM. On the buy side, publisher quality beats a raw impression count.

Publishers watch RPM, fill, and viewability. Advertisers read spend by publisher and placement against ROAS or CPA. Cut a bad placement before you blame the creative.

Frequently asked questions

How is a publisher different from an advertiser?
The publisher sells audience and space. The advertiser puts a message there to earn traffic or sales.
Does programmatic remove the publisher?
No. It automates the sale. Inventory still belongs to the publisher; the SSP sits on that side.

  • AdSenseGoogle’s display network for publishers: it fills on-site slots and pays a share of clicks or impressions. It is not the same product as Google Ad Manager for larger inventory.
  • Ad SpaceThe placement where an ad sits, plus the inventory that slot can sell. A fixed unit, run of site, and run of network are not the same product.
  • Display AdvertisingBanners, native units, and other visual formats on sites and apps. Unlike search text ads, they show up before someone has typed a query into the box.
  • CPMCPM (Cost Per Mille) is the cost of 1,000 ad impressions; it is one of the most common media buying units.
  • Real-Time BiddingSelling a single impression in an auction that finishes in milliseconds as the page loads. The price is not a preprinted package; the bid follows that user and context.
  • SSPSupply-Side Platform: software publishers use to offer inventory to programmatic demand and try to maximize yield.
