Digital marketing term
Keyword Ranking
Your URL’s position in the search results for a given query; first place and page ten can share a keyword and still earn very different clicks. Rank belongs to a URL–query pair, not the whole domain.
Detailed explanation
Position shifts with device, location, and personalization, so one screenshot is not where you rank. Search Console gives average position and clicks; rank trackers watch a chosen query set.
Winning a term on the wrong-intent URL does not convert. Two URLs fighting one query split the rank. Obsessing over position without touching title or internal links misses the work.
Decide with clicks, impressions, and conversions together. An informational query in position 12 can be worth less than a brand query in position 1. Read 7- and 28-day windows; daily jumps are noise.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does rank differ on phone and desktop?
- Results shift by device, location, and history. Pin the same location and device type when you compare.
- If average position drops, is the page worse?
- Not always. New queries entering the set pull the average down. Check clicks and impressions per query.
